A Guide On How To Decide Your Outdoor Classroom Specification

As a company, we pride ourselves on offering one of the UK’s most comprehensive range of outdoor classrooms and shelters – so this therefore means lots of options and choices for the customer!.

The starting point for the end user is to decide upon the following: how much money do we want to spend (or at least set a budget range which can allow for multiple options), how many children and staff do we need to cater for, what are we going to use it for, will it fit in the designated area and do we want something which is open sided (gazebo style) or fully enclosed for year round use.

We can help in all aspects of above.

If we take the open-sided gazebo style outdoor classroom first. We offer three sizes in the octagonal shape which is the most popular (3m, 4m and 5m), three sizes in square (3m x 3m, 4m  x4m, 5m x 5m) and three in rectangular (5m x 4m, 6m x 4m and 7m x 4m). The standard specification is solid timber lower level panels to the sides, timber decking floor with sub-base and a layer of skirting, internal benching and timber roof with IKO felt shingle tiles with waterproof membrane and loglap ceiling. Additional extras or options include canvas roll-down canvas panels to the windows and door (to give more protection from the elements when so needed), internal desks, tiered amphitheatre style seating, ramp or steps, upper solid panels (to form a wall) with whiteboards. We also offer three colours for the roof felt shingle tiles namely green, terracotta red or black. We can also offer cedar shingle tiles but at the time of writing this blog, these tiles are quite hard to come by with the current worldwide materials shortage and are consequently quite expensive.

And then there are the eco options which help the children foster an appreciation of the environment – this includes our renewable energy pack with roof mounted solar panel, wind turbine, data logger system and monitoring/power board with sockets; guttering and water butt for rainwater harvesting; living sedum roof and a water irrigation system with built-in planters.

We have even recently undertaken a job where we built an extended front decking/veranda area to a 5m eco outdoor classroom.

Then we move onto the fully enclosed outdoor classroom range. Again we offer similar sizes to those listed above but in this instance, these buildings are modular so no-one is ever the same specification. The customer can choose between different window and wall configurations and other options allow for insulation to walls, floor and roof; French doors in either pine or a hardwood Sapele; internal wall options including matchboard pine or white panelling with a decorative V groove; floor coverings to include decking, matchboard pine and vinyl. And in this range, we offer a variety of external timber claddings namely redwood pine (treated), cedar and larch. Windows can either be single glazed (laminated) or double glazed.

Also for this type of all-year-round building range, we offer our Hideout House Cabin and our pods (the pods are pre-manufactured units which come delivered off the back of a transport truck).

If a school is wanting an outdoor shelter – and by this we mean a roof supported by posts/legs – we offer some with either a marine grade canvas roof (available in a choice of colours) or a timber roof with felt shingle tiles. These are available in set sizes although you can join them together to give a bigger m2 foot print. We also offer a unique fire pit shelter which has a hole cut into the top of the roof (with a decorative roof cap system over it) and we are able to offer roll-down canvas panels with special fire retardant properties and fire retardant paint for the underside of the roof.

Used Outdoor Classroom Pods for Sale

We have recently been approached by a school in Northampton who bought a few of outdoor classroom pods from us a couple of years ago. Due to a relocation programme, they have approached us to see if we can help sell them on to another school.

They are painted in two colour schemes – red and yellow.

The cost for each pod is £4,400 + VAT + siting/delivery

This would be a good opportunity to purchase one of our very popular pods at a reduced rate.

New Product Design Service

Technology moves on so quickly nowadays it can be quite daunting but we certainly need to embrace it rather than be scared of it.

A lot of the enquires we get from school staff are at the start of their journey – and by this I mean they sort of know what they want but not really and therefore need some further guidance. So there is quite a lot of initial questions to be asked, a lot of head scratching involvement, sharing of ideas with related parties etc before we usually move forward to providing quotes and design proposals. And as we offer quite a lot of options, we factor these into the discussions as well.

I was visited recently by someone who has just finished university with a first class honours degree in Product Design and he was telling me about AR (augmented reality) and showed me some examples of it. It totally blew me away – the example he showed me was of a new design of kitchen units and appliances which you could customise on screen in a high resolution 3D modelling format. Once you had decided upon your design, you could then (by way of an app) place your new AR kitchen into your existing kitchen to see what it looks like once installed. Absolutely brilliant!

So we will be soon be introducing this design service for our outdoor classroom and shelters range. Customers will be able to pick a product from the website they are interested in – so say for example an octagonal outdoor classroom. They can then choose from a suite of options to add to this  – the size first off and then the various options to choose from eg roll-down canvas panels, renewable energy equipment etc – they can see what this looks like on-line and it will give a build-up price indicator as well.

Once the customer has decided upon the final specification, they can then put that building into their own playground (scaled) to see what it looks like.

Renewable Energy System on Eco Outdoor Classrooms and Shelters

energy monitoring board

When I set up my company 12 years ago, it was built on two founding principles – always try and create new, exciting and relevant product ideas and always try and promote environmental awareness and sustainability within schools. And 12 years on, we are still doing exactly this today!

I originally had an idea of creating an outdoor classroom which not only provided for an outdoor learning environment or extra space but also was an educational resource in itself. So children could actually learn from the building as well as using it. So the concept of the all encompassing eco classroom was borne – it would have a living sedum roof to attract biodiversity and act as a good natural building insulator; it would feature a water harvesting and irrigation system for the built-in planters and beds – but the main feature was to be how we could demonstrate to children how renewable energy is generated and used.

There are many companies out there who can provide solar panels for power – that was certainly one option to look at but I wanted to move on from this slightly and come up with a system which was more educational and easy to install. And was within a certain price parameter. No one was interested in this idea from all the solar power companies I spoke to as it involved coming up with a bespoke design and “thinking outside of the box”.

Until I met with a company who are based in Staffordshire who did a lot of work with schools anyway and they loved the idea! Together we created the educational renewable energy system which is comprised essentially of a wind turbine and solar panel (roof or pole mounted) which then feeds down into a central monitoring board mounted on a back wall panel. On this board are two isolators – one for the solar panel and one for the wind turbine so you can alternate between the two if so required. The energy created from the sun and wind via the panel and turbine is stored in a battery (safely housed on the board as well). This is then translated into usable electricity via an inverter and the provision of two outdoor sockets. It is low voltage so very safe allowing children to plug in laptops, visualisers, tablets etc and use pure, green power! Also included with the system is a datalogger (to monitor such things as CO2 saved, speed of turbine and watts created etc) and a bulk head light.

So to answer the question of this blog – How to promote renewable energy at your school? Simply show them and buy one of these systems!

It is interesting to note too that this system is now sold as an accessory on 42% of our outdoor classroom installations. To see one in action, please click on this video link

Post Covid Recovery Funding for Schools

As part of our overall service, we like to help schools access funding to pay for our various products if indeed they need assistance in this respect. Hence the reason why we spend a lot of time researching what grants are currently available for educational establishments and what type of projects they will support. Once we have this information, we then point schools in the right direction. We also very much appreciate that school staff do not always have the time themselves to do this research so that is why we feel that this adds a certain value added benefit to our overall customer service.

We are presently finding that a lot of schools are having success in obtaining funding for what we call Post Covid Recovery projects. As has been widely promoted in the media, the school community – staff, pupils and parents – have been significantly affected by the pandemic and subsequent lockdowns. As well as affecting their education of course, lockdowns and social restrictions have taken a noticeable toll on children’s mental well-being and health. Projects that are helping promote and assist with these issues are therefore tending to attract the most money – this would include (but not limited to) the following:

  • Any outdoor learning  – less chance of Covid transmission outside, easy to socially distance and an appreciation of the outdoors and nature
  • Physical play – projects that promote fitness (healthy body equals healthy mind)
  • Sensory gardens – calming and nurturing environments
  • Sensory rooms
  • Mindfulness areas including nurture rooms

At the Hideout House Company, we do offer quite a significant range of products which are complimentary to all of the above. We offer outdoor classrooms, fitness trails, enclosed outdoor classrooms.

For small nurture room groups, we also have a range of unique classroom pods.

Our sensory gardens can be a simple range of play panels and planters right up to fully landscaped garden design projects.

If you would therefore like to discuss how we can help your school access grant funding and our product range, then please give us a call on 01832 275902 or email: info@hideouthouse.com

Outdoor Classrooms Used As School Libraries

We have noticed a lot of requests recently from schools who are looking to have an outdoor classroom used as a library. The main reason for wanting to have a separate building outside in the school grounds is for a couple of reasons:

Firstly, there is not enough spare space inside the main school building as every square inch is utilised. But just as importantly, due to the sheer nature of what it is being used for i.e a library, there is a need to have a space of quietness and tranquility (which again might not easily be found in the melee of the main school building!).

We have found too that schools are looking for this place to be inspiring – somewhere the children actually will want to go and feel sufficiently relaxed in to read and study. And of course, it has to be able to be used all year round and is usually insulated and heated (the last thing you want is the building getting damp inside and ruining all of the library books).

The Hideout House Company have a range of such buildings which are suitable for all of the above – but the most popular choices seem to our buildings which are a bit “quirky” shall we say. These would be our Hideout House Cabinsoutdoor classroom pods and our enclosed modular classroom range. The choice of building really depends upon the budget available, the space required and the size of area where it is being sited. In certain cases, we can also fit extra shelving for the books.

There are also certain grants available at the moment which schools might want to take advantage of. Sometimes these outdoor classroom libraries are used as sensory rooms, nurture rooms, mindfulness areas and calming environments.

If your school would like to discuss the possibility of having one of our outdoor buildings to be used as the school library room, then please contact us on 01832 275902 or email: info@hideouthouse.com

Schools, The Environment Crisis & The Hideout House Company

It is ten years now since I set up the Hideout House Company to sell a new and unique range of playground equipment and outdoor classrooms/buildings to schools. The main emphasis then – as it is now – was on developing products which in some way could promote eco educational learning as well as being both practical and fun. I had already started going down this line with my previous company where I pioneered the concept of an eco lodge outdoor classroom – a range of  buildings where every facet of their design and manufacturing was with sustainability in mind but more importantly, these elements children could actually learn from so it therefore became both a functional and didactic product combined into one. For example, children could see how the sedum on the roof changes colour with the seasons and how it attracts wildlife and promotes bio-diversity, they could plant and grow their own food in the planters and mini greenhouses provided, they could harvest rainwater in the water butts which also incorporates a basic water irrigation system (to feed the planters)and they could monitor the energy created by the roof mounted wind turbine and solar panel. Children and students will therefore not just be told about sustainable development because they will actually be living and working within it the whole time.

The Green Room

Ten years on, we as a company are still promoting the environmental cause with our eco friendly range of products but this whole agenda has now just become ever more real and important. The media is currently reporting every single day on the catastrophic realities of climate change around the world and why we, as the human race, need to act now to avoid disaster on a scale that we have never seen before and from which there is no return.

Schools can obviously play their part  – and they already very much do so via the excellent Eco Schools programme – in educating children about environmental issues and how we can all behave more responsibly in the crucial years to come. It almost has to be at a point that children don’t have to learn this but instead it just comes to them as second nature. Greta Thunberg has obviously been a major inspiration in this respect by demonstrating what “young people power” can do on a global scale.

We are undoubtedly running out of time and we must now all do our part to make sure that this planet is here for future generations. We at the Hideout House Company are therefore still developing new products the whole time which very much have the environment in mind – these products include eco classroomsoutdoor classroomsplayground products made out of recycled plastic and growing gardens.

Schools must adapt techniques and environmental policies to help lead the transition to a low carbon economy and we very much intend to be at the forefront of this.

What Sort of Base Do I Need for The Outdoor Classroom?

This is perhaps one of the most commonly asked questions from our customers when we are discussing build requirements for their outdoor classroom or undertaking a site visit. A lot depends on the site itself and a number of other mitigating factors – whether it is level, what type of existing surface the feature will be installed onto (eg grass/tarmac/concrete etc), and if the area is prone to flooding and rainwater retention etc

But in the majority of cases, we install a timber sub-frame levelling base as per below image. If the ground is not exactly level, we can get the floor to be so by setting the posts into the ground at different depths over the span of the area. With this system, we can typically cope with a fall of no more than 350mm over a 5m area. If the fall is greater than this, then some pre-excavation and levelling work will have to be done (by others) before we come to install on site. Below the timber sub-frame base is a geo textile membrane to stop the grass growing through.

Once this base is installed, we then build up the walls for the outdoor classroom and install the decking floor. So that you cannot see this once completed, we install a decking timber section as skirting around the base which also gives the building quite an appealing aesthetic feel to it. If there is indeed a fall over the area, then we compensate for this by adding extra decking panels around the skirt which our experienced joiners do on site as they are cut to size.

If the ground conditions are quite boggy and prone to flooding, then we have used a ground screw pile system in the past. These are essentially giant screws which get drilled and secured into the ground – without the need for laying any concrete – and onto which are fixed the timber bearers of our base. The outdoor classrooms then sits up off the ground and does not come into direct contact with any sitting water (see photo below of this system)

Last but not least, it is possible to lay a concrete base. Typically this is undertaken by local contractors as they tend to be way more competitive on price and if a school does opt for this, we are able to provide dimensional drawings.

Major Project at Stubbers Adventure Park

We have just completed a major build project at Stubbers Adventure Park in Essex. The adventure centre recently received a grant to update their facilities and the Hideout House Company were chosen as the supplier for a series of buildings.

The park needed some extra space for their visiting schools and so we were commissioned to install 12 of our 5m octagonal outdoor classrooms in three different areas in clusters of four. To differentiate them, we used a different coloured roof tile and matching roll-down canvas panels to the windows and doors. Each outdoor classroom featured internal desks and benches for the visiting school children.

Next to the new car park, we have also built a bespoke 12m x 5m Welcome Centre where guests can register when they arrive. This also featured an office. To make this look a little different in appearance, we clad the building in a rustic style wany edged larch with a cedar shingle tile roof.

In addition to the above, we also built a ticket booth under an extended roof cover.

Further plans are in place for some extra projects this year including an eco centre and a new 7m x 4m enclosed outdoor classroom to go next to the sailing lake
